1989 Little League World Champions to Present Benefit Home Run Derby as Part of 20th Anniversary Reunion

Trumbull, CT:  Trumbull Little League and the members of the 1989 World Championship team will present a “Home Run Derby” to benefit the Challenger Division for youth baseball players with special needs at Unity Park in Trumbull on Saturday, August 8 at 2:30pm.

The event, which will include members of the 1989 team and several current 12-year-old Trumbull all-star players, is part of a reunion weekend for the group that defeated Taiwan on ABC’s Wide World of Sports in Williamsport, Pennsylvania twenty years ago this August.

Current New York Rangers captain Chris Drury pitched Trumbull to a 5-2 victory back in 1989 as a youngster and is excited for the reunion. “It should be a fun weekend, and the home run derby will support an extremely worthwhile youth program,” he said.

“Challenger is a wonderful outlet for Trumbull youths with disabilities and other special needs to enjoy the game of baseball,” said Ken Martin, co-chairman of the event. “We want to help make sure the program has the resources to keep moving forward.”

Trumbull First Selectman Raymond G. Baldwin, Jr. and Vince “Sweetness” Santilli of the WICC-600 AMCollege Basketball Report” will pair up as on-field announcers, and State Representative T.R. Rowe of Trumbull will act as honorary umpire for the day.

Refreshments will be available and the event is open to the public.
